I quickly snuck back into my house, the cold snow melting off my shoulders as the heat warmed my body. I hung my coat and other accessories on the waiting coat rack and kicked off my snow-caked boots. Mom called out to me from the kitchen, her voice stressed as she struggled with tonight’s dinner.

“Josh! Laura! Is that you?!”

“No, it’s the police!” I answered back. My mom gave a small laugh. I walked into the kitchen to join her.  My mother, who had been in the middle of stirring the mash potatoes, turned to me with a small smile.

“If it’s the police, who’s been murdered?”

“Your son! His body was found buried inside of a snowman, he was frozen solid!” I respond back, attempting to keep my laughter contained. My mother looked at me with fake shock, playing along with my act. She put her head down in her hands and pretended to cry.

“Oh no, my poor son! Officer, where is the body now?”

“Still in the snowman, I’m afraid. his body was so stiff we couldn’t even pull him out of the snow.” I place a hand on my Mom’s arm in an attempt to comfort her. “But don’t worry, your little girl is still here for you.” Mom wiped the fake tears she had going down her face and turned back to the mash potatoes.

“That was a fun little scene, Laura, but really where is your brother?”

“Oh he’s still outside, building a dumb snowman.” I leave my mother’s side to take my seat at the dining room table. I pick up the book I had left on the counter and flipped to where my bookmark laid.

“Well, hopefully, he comes inside soon, dinner’s almost ready!” I nod and look out the window.

“Hey mom, would you mind if I read to you from my book?” I ask, staring off into the white emptiness. My eyes resting on the snowman, wearing Josh’s hat.

“Well, of course, honey! You always tell the best stories!” I smile and begin my reading.
