Spirit Week is a great time for classes to unite in a competitive spirit and show support for the school by having dress-up days. During Spirit Week, students compete to earn the place at the top. However, this year’s schedule has been flipped upside-down by the seniors! Students, upperclassmen or otherwise, are up in arms about the recent senior decision to deliberately lose the Spirit Week competition.

The Spirit Week competition involves a dress-up challenge every day of the week and an event called the Penny Wars. The dress-up days this week are Pajama Day for Monday, Tie Die Tuesday, USA day on Wednesday, Camo Day on Thursday, and class colors on Friday. Each person that dresses up gets scored up toward victory for their class. The Penny Wars is a drive wherein students drop coins into jars corresponding to each class. Pennies are points up to a win, and any silver coins dropped in other classes’ jars take points away from their score. The profits from the Penny Wars will go to Little Blessings.

The Class of 2018 has lost the Spirit Week competition each consecutive year since beginning high school at NCHS, reliably placing last every time. Thus, it was ultimately decided to use this as an advantage. After all, if they cannot win, who is to say they cannot gain fame with spectacular loss? This is the thought behind the unique senior strategy — while they may not be united in victory, they surely will be united by their loss!

There are, of course, still seniors pushing to go for the win, and not every senior is going along with the movement. Many seniors see it as an inconsiderate maneuver toward those that do want to win for their final year. If the seniors succeed in this loss, this Spirit Week is considered one of the first, if not the very first Spirit Week competition in which a class has managed to lose four years in a row.
